Jan Prušinovský visited CME Content Academy: I Wouldn't Have Said Okresní přebor Would Become a Cult Hit

CME Content Academy, a course for training future television professionals, hosted one of the most prominent Czech comedy creators - Jan Prušinovský. The director and screenwriter, known for his bold and, according to many, conservative humor, introduced students to the creative process of his projects and shared valuable practical experiences.

Prušinovský, who brought to life the popular series "Most!" among others, spoke about his beginnings and Czech humor. "Most!" significantly contributed to the discussion on the integration of Roma into Czech society without resorting to clichés or moral preaching. His collaboration with screenwriter Petr Kolečko forms a specific comedic signature that, by often skirting the edge, more easily delivers its message.

"The defining moment for me was shooting the series 'District League' for TV Nova," Prušinovský recalled. "It was a challenging shoot, and I wouldn't have said it would become a cult series." He also mentioned how viewers sometimes fall in love with his works over time, as in the case of the Christmas fairy tale "Kdyby byly ryby" ("If There Were Fish"), which didn't convince audiences upon its premiere but finds its audience ten years later.

Prušinovský emphasized the crucial role of a script editor, which he believes is often taken over by the producer today, but whose importance and recognition are diminishing in television production. "Great scripts are not only the work of the writer and producer but also the quality work of the script editor," he stated.

One of his most challenging projects was the series "Dwarf," a fantasy comedy requiring many practical and visual effects. "The disappearance of the retirement home and similar scenes were really tough to shoot," Prušinovský remembered.

Additionally, Prušinovský often works with non-professional actors, which requires a specific approach, as students had previously experienced in workshops with Robert Sedláček. Prušinovský is now preparing for new projects, including one for TV Nova.
